Monday 3rd November 1941

We're back in Cairo staying at the Marina Palace Hotel for our last night of leave.

A very hot week and today has been hottest of all, with a khamsin wind like an oven blast. We've been drinking (tea, coffee, lemonade, beer, water) all the day. What about those in Tobruch, with their ½ gallon of salty water for all purposes, for 24 hours? Has it been as hot there?

Now I'll turn in and sleep well until the boy brings a pot of tea in the morning. The time is past midnight and the street below is quiet except for a gharri's rattle and a distant motor car's hum.
