Sunday 19th October 1941
I'm on the “Well” list now, so shall soon be leaving here. Shan't be sorry really; it's been a bit lonely since the gang went. This afternoon I took a long walk along the coast and came to an Arab village. We'd been warned to keep away from this fishing village, as the inhabitants were alleged hashish smugglers, and said to be hostile.
However when I (professional interest) approached a man who was busily painting a boat, he smiled and said, “Sit down and be welcome,” - hardly a hostile reception! I was there, talking, for a couple of hours. The painter knew quite a bit of English and translated what the others said. “You come back tomorrow?” he urged, when I left.
