Sunday 1st February 1942
This morning at Church we included in our prayers a few words “for our comrades in Singapore.” Yes, as today's paper says, “ISLAND FORTRESS FACES SIEGE: the battle of Malaya has ended, the battle of Singapore has begun.”
Here is the actual paragraph on the bottom of the page of “Told by an Idiot,” which I referred to yesterday:
“...With the Celtic poets, with their opening of strange gates onto dim, magic lands. The loveliness, like the wavering, lovely rhythms of the sea, of WB Yeats, took her, as it took her whole generation, by storm; the tired twilight sadness of Fiona Macleod was balm to her.”
