Thursday 11th June 1942

Felt pretty crook this afternoon, so went down to RHQ for some aspirin. Temperature 102 degrees, Pulse 100, evacuated with suspected malaria.

Miles of bumpy miredam. Air raid; mass huge bombers and several fighters. Everyone scattered but I was too ill to be frightened so sat on a box near the truck until the others returned. Subsequently I was transferred into an empty ambulance at the rear of a Red Cross convoy; it was a sort of mobile ADS.

There was an “Egyptian Mail” in this ambulance – yesterday's! All about the battle of “the cauldron” which apparently means this part of the war zone. Journalese!

Travelled on many hours. Made close laager at dusk. Two aspirins and a deep sleep.
