Stillness 1943

“They will not come, the gentian days,
With the cornfield white in summer, or the long
Provencal noon, but with the autumnal storm,
Strikes in the north, and random shots.
They will come back, the strenuous days,
On Peternet Ridge, the Eagle Nest,
And cross the gap of trivial time
Sure as the wind, the night express...”
