Got to the shop 7.30p.m. Cold and misery. We all waited on the pavement until 8.00 o’clock, Paddy Regan gloomily playing a mouth organ.
Another new hand arrived, transferred from Coventry, Hunt. Worked hard at the butter. Many interruptions: in spasms everyone joined in the struggle.
After closing time Lynn and Woolerton felt playful. During a battle of the flour Lynn’s bowler hat was covered with it and in a fit of hysterics he tore the hat to bits!
At 9.30p.m. we packed up the butter and began cleaning. Just as we had finished the Manager rushed down the ladder and ordered us to begin anew! For a while it looked like mutiny. Eventually Woolerton and Lynn went home, leaving Ball, Wright, Langley, Regan and I to carry on. We escaped at 10.30p.m. Fog unusually thick – blackness. Walked home – it was quicker than using the tram.
