We were phoned by the Labour Exchange. A weeks dole to be collected by me next Friday. Pleasant surprise!
More good news - Mr. Lanning astonished me by saying I should possibly be sent to Lincoln and soon. Taking me on one side he said quietly, ‘I take it Dawson that this is purely a family matter. You have no complaints about the shop here!’ I replied ‘Of course not, sir. It is a family matter’ (I remember he seemed quite human for a moment. Of course he had to cover his own back).
Frantic cleaning up and stock-taking once the shop closed. We left at 10.15 p.m.
