Thursday 29th May 1941

On the exchange, 1p.m. Flies and sweat. My God, I'm thirsty! Tea; cold water from a mountain spring; iced lemonade in a Palestine canteen; iced lager in a Brighton bar. Common, ordinary water from a tap; sugary, creamy tea in many small dainty cups; cool English beer “drawn” from the wood (the barrels being in a shaded place with wet sacks on top of them); Ice cream sundaes with a good deal of ice and some real fruit and real cream; Oranges, sugar melons, grapes and grapefruit, plucked as they grow on plant and tree...

Hot tea, cool beer, cold water... Such thoughts are torture!
