Friday 22nd May 1942
I returned from Cairo fairly early on Wednesday evening. The Guard was just mounting as I walked into Camp and I noticed with some ironical amusement that Jack Chenery, who had come back the previous day, was in charge of the 339 Guard! I saw the faint shadow of a cynical grin cross his face as he sloped arms... “They've got me at it again, chum,” sort of thing!
It was a dusty bloody evening and I felt quite fed up with the war, the Army and the desert. However that was two days ago, and I'm now quite resigned to the routine again!
