It was ironical enough to find ourselves at railhead but – this is even more funny – we are now back in Tobruch! After three days of dust storms on the way, we came in yesterday morning by the same road on which we set forth for civilisation, two months ago. Half an hour after our arrival, we saw 18 Stukas dive-bombing the harbour through the usual terrific AA barrage... Just like thee old times again.
The enemy is 25 miles away. Our present role is that of garrison artillery.
“If our forward troops withdraw,” said the Battery Captain morosely, “I hope they come here, instead of dropping right back towards Bardia.”
“So do I, definitely sir!” responded the NCO i/c signals, Sergeant Hignall!
