Saturday 18th December 1943

Out of sight of land since leaving Straits of Gibraltar last night. At present we are plugging steadily northwards towards England - thank heavens, and the Lord save us all from the cold!

A long swell is becoming noticeable, accompanied by an up and down motion of the deck. There are already several vacant places at mealtimes...

Evening: All ports (or whatever one calls the glass which goes in the portholes) and deadlights were closed in this ward, from midday onwards. The seas are heavier, speed has been considerably reduced, the atmosphere down here is very close.
