Sunday 31st October 1943

32 furlongs yesterday, 48 today.

Brown and I spend hours a day discussing such pleasant, interesting and useless subjects as the planetary and galactic systems and the decadent days of Rome. Our conversation is reflected in the books we have lately read: “I, Claudius”, “The Stars in their Courses”, “Nero, Emperor of Rome”.

I am the star expert. (I've just located Andromeda, the Great Square of Pegasus and the Great Nebula in Andromeda. Magnificent achievement!)

Nobby Brown is the Roman expert. (He knows nearly all the degrees of relationship between the various members of the Julian and Claudian houses.)
