Tuesday 10th August 1943

Paced a mile today.

In between lunch and tea this afternoon I had an idea for a poem (though having recently seen in a book the phrase; “glimpsed the lost sword flash on the mountainside of youth, that he would always seek but never find”) and rapidly roughed out the outline. Had another glance at it in the evening and finished it (and five Gold Flake cigarettes!) in little more than an hour.

“We have lost the stars,” 34 lines and the 19th poem to be entered in my book. It is the best one since “Avalon” - and maybe I shall be able to keep on writing. Quiet, placid surroundings seem to help my imagination considerably.
