Tuesday 20th April 1943

This morning I went to the medical Specialist at the 23rd Hospital, for my chest to be examined. The Ward MO sent me, when he found I'd once been graded “D” for Bronchitis. The specialist examined me and made no comment. I felt too indifferent to open the envelope he gave me to bring back. Tomorrow I go again for an X-ray.

I feel rather brighter on the whole. Yesterday after three abortive attempts – I concluded a letter to April (only a short letter-card) and today I am reading a “thriller”. Only a cheap book, but it's better than having to sit brooding, unable to read or write. I got a good score on the intelligence test the other day – 60/60.
