Tuesday 7th September 1943

Evening in one of the pleasanter wards in the worst mental hospital in the MEF. Just now, I overheard preliminary psychological questions being asked of a newly admitted patient. One of the Sister's first questions was, “Have you ever been in prison?” They expect us to be ex-criminals!

Just now also, the ward orderly rushed in, shouting in a harsh grating voice, “Do any of yer want number nines?” A man with a voice like that shouldn't be allowed within earshot of nervous or mentally afflicted men.

A wind is roaring through the ward. All windows are open and all electric fans racing at high speed. I feel quite OK – the above criticisms are general and abstract.

Paced 14 furlongs yesterday, 16 today.
