Monday 21st August 1939

Left Matlock 10:20a.m. Leicester, two hours, 54 miles. I left the faulty tyre with the makers, Leicester Rubber Co. They agreed to replace this with a new tyre at half price, anytime during the next six months, if I wrote reminding of the circumstances.

Stopped for lunch and a fill-up at 2 ½ hours 69 miles. There had been rain (the wiper worked OK) but the sun was shining when I took to the road again. My jacket soon came off and sun glasses went on!

Kettering 3 ¾ hours, 74 miles. Thereafter I worked to schedule again. Godmanchester.
4 ¾ hours, 104 miles Cambridge. Saffron Waldon, 5 ¾ hours, 134 miles. Drove slowly then. Reached Stock – 166 miles – in 7 ¼ hours.
