Monday 22nd January 1940

Odd sort of days now. A good deal of waiting while things are inspected or checked. Nice change from work!

In the canteen all the morning whilst our AB64’s (Army Pay-Books) were examined. Ling (usually critical) paid me a direct compliment! Without orders to break-off, we all flocked across to the canteen counter, ordering tea, cakes, chocolate etc. whilst Serge. Hignall looked on wearily. “We wouldn’t be doing this if you were in charge, Steve,” he said, contentedly sipping a cup of tea.
“Is that criticism or compliment?”
“Compliment! We shouldn’t be allowed to do as we like, like this!”
