Tuesday 8th October 1940

A chaotic Brigade Exercise in the desert beyond the escarpment. A very unpleasant experience for myself and the M1 equipment and probably little liked by any of the personnel who took part. 339 returned at 11 o'clock, very tired and very hungry, not expecting anything to eat, but there was tea and hot stew, which we ate sitting in the moonlight, minus flies.

The moon had set before we got to bed, many of us still unwashed and unshaven.
