Sunday 1st March 1942

We are dug in, exchange manned, all as usual, on a dusty piece of miredam on, I think, the Pilastrino sector of Tobruch.

The time is 3:45a.m. It rained like the devil yesterday afternoon whilst we were laying lines. I trudged for five miles behind M1, maintaining the line. The signallers are sleeping pretty snugly here; we dug in a tent. For the exchange, we took over an old dug out, roofed and sand bagged, with a good shelf and cupboards all round the walls. It is surrounded by a rough circle of large bomb craters.

We've been warned not to get too “garrison minded,” so maybe we have not come here to stay.
