Thursday 4th November 1943

38 furlongs today.

Continuing my new hobby – finding stars: Apart from Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Cassiopeia, Orion's Belt and the Pleiades, which I knew before, I have now identified the constellations of Andromeda, Pegasus, Cygnus, Lyra and Acquila, also the individual stars Vega, Sirius and Altair.

I'd like to swot up the Orionis region but this isn't visible until late in the evening, after bedtime. There are three fine stars there, Alpha, Beta and Gamma Orionis ie Betelgeux, Bellatrix and Rigel.

I wanted to locate Capella (in Auriga) and Aldebaran (in Taurus) tonight; they should become visible about 8 o'clock but I'm foiled tonight by clouds.
