Tuesday 12th April 1938

Returned to Sway, just for a night. A nice change. Took Pat to the Pictures. Just as we were parting, outside 218, I suddenly thought that if I kissed her it would somehow prevent me from making love to anyone else. So I looped some string round her wrist, led her back to the car and dashed to Eastern Avenue – our AA gun position on the night of the black out. Explained my motives and then we brazenly kissed under the bright moon.

But it was no use. An hour-and-a-half later at Sway, I was alone with Phyllis and we were in each other’s arms. Girl kisses and passion kisses within 90 minutes. What a worm! What a worm.
