Friday 8th April 1938
Called at the Doctor’s tonight for an exam. with regard to joining the 54th East Anglian Divisional Signals. Fairly strict look-over which resulted in “Fit for General Service” (Vision 6/6 each eye).
One of the happiest evenings I’ve had with Pat, so far. No sentimental bilge or quarrels. We went to the Mayphil at Battlesbridge. Pat had never been in a bar before and was thrilled. I showed her how to play bar-billiards: she learnt jolly quickly and beat me! She sat on a table with a glass of lemonade (and a scarlet ribbon in her black hair!) and looked curious, and self-possessed and very young.
Delightful altogether!
