Tuesday 24th May 1938

I felt desolate and unhappy. After the last fruitless call – Romford 5:30 p.m. – I went home to Ealing Common, and my mother.

(“Cuthbert Cornwallis on a cold winter’s day,
Discovered with anguish he’d quite lost his way…”)

Reached Eastwoodbury 11:30 p.m.
