Tuesday 17th May 1938

Ceaseless rain. A good thing for farmers, anyhow. They have been praying for rain.
Depressing day for business. An awkward complaint. Buyers out. Buyers uninterested.

Bought myself two new shirts – one at 10/6, one at 8/11 – to clear up the gloom.
Telephoned Tutton the Vet and as he had nothing to do either, we went to the Pictures. Afterwards he came back to Roedean for supper. Still raining when he went, at half past eleven.
