Sunday 17th December 1939

Went to Eileen’s tonight. Sat with her, alone, in the fire glow. At first we sat on opposite sides of the hearth. She was hurt and disappointed – something I’d said, either being deliberately sarcastic or unknowingly.

However I was gentle tonight (being bitterly regretful) and eventually she came beside me. Soft bewitching loveliness! Beautiful she looked with the fire’s glow making a halo of light around her hair.

She was Olga or Thora. Eileen and Lucy in the light, Thora and Olga in the shadows.
