A rum order came through today on the line between TILT and our command post:
“That you, Shorten?” “Yes” “Howell here. Stand-to” “Righto” “Off”
This was immediately passed on to troops and boxes. The BC fumed; “We've been standing-to for three bloody months” he said, “And now they tell us stand-to!”
Apparently this was an anticipated order however. At 9p.m. - three hours later – we got “Stand-down”. Apparently, it was only a rehearsal. For what? Most of us think it was a practice for the Relief of Tobruch but one hardly dares hope that!
