Monday January 23rd 1933

Up at 7.30 a.m. – in the cold and early morning. Hastened to Thorogoods, near the Stonebow in the centre of the city. Waited, shivering. The staff (3 in all) drifted along and at 8.30 came the manager. A quiet, easy-going type of man. Introduced myself and changed into uniform. Cleaning window shades etc. Butter room, big and cold. Made large prints for display. Spacious cellars, like ancient dungeons.

On butter alone all day. Hot cocoa in the morning. Went out at tea time to the Woolworth snack bar. Sausage roll and coffee. A short walk round; bought a banana which resembled a stick of ice.

Closed 6p.m. Much more relaxed atmosphere than the Leicester shop and the hours are probably less hard. (The butter room I remember was more clean and spacious than at Leicester. Plenty of headroom so we could work without stooping, I think there was even a lavatory on the premises.)
