Friday 16th March 1934

At digs, Harvey accused me of tampering with his wireless set, though I previously had said I would not touch the thing. Then called me “liar”. I trembled tensely and suggested we settle the argument in the garden. Eventually we both unbent, he agreed to take my word and we became unusually friendly for a while.

Miss Collier had some bad news and being upset, I could not bear to add to her troubles.

Walked to Staines, Library books under my arm. The rain drove at me whipping my cheeks. Red gods! My stride became jaunty and swift, I sang as I went.
