Tuesday 23rd January 1934

Did not leave work until 6p.m., again. Too cold to stay in digs so went to Staines.
Spot of supper in a different little café, just off High Street. Bought a tobacco pouch and, foolishly, 10 Craven A and 10 Picadilly cigarettes.

9 o’clock. Walked home and spent an hour by a watch mans brazier, talking. The eloquent workman who talked of longitude and latitude, the moon, origin of man and blackshirts. These encounters always make me long to be a writer! Strange!

Digs 10p.m. Read in bed awhile, by flashlight.
