Monday 15th January 1934

After the final cigarette last night, I smoked another pipe of St. Julian. Later I staggered upstairs, expecting to die but didn’t: was not sick even. The novice smoker.

During the afternoon at work, Bill took me into the stores and taught me how to roll cigarettes. He is an expert; can roll a cigarette as quickly as I can take one from the case. Fairly idle evening. Reading “About Ourselves”. Rolling and smoking cigarettes. Chatting at the coffee stall.
