Saturday 15th April 1939
Tried to make up for a bad day yesterday by making calls today. Worked until 3 o’clock without any luck. Trade is definitely failing now. What can one expect when they are saying in Parliament “… a general European war is imminent…”.
Called for Lois at 3:30 in a somewhat gloomy mood. At the slightest provocation there’d have been a bloody row but happily Lois was sensitive enough to feel the atmosphere and “handled” me tactfully. So after a pleasant walk in Hockley Woods – now budding green – and tea at Rayleigh I left her, feeling much soothed.
Evening: cleaned my uniform and read notes in readiness for tomorrow’s signals classification.
