Saturday 29th April 1939
Several orders in the mail this morning. Two from Churchill Johnson of Laindon – one for Stock and one for delivery to Billings. Yes, a good week! The turnover has risen now for five consecutive weeks, praise be!
Afternoon at Oakdene, with Lois. We tried to dance – in the limited space, did a play-reading – Bernard Shaw and Shakespeare.
Evening: went to the Palace Theatre, to see a hell of a thriller called “Love from a Stranger”. Sat in the Gods (6d seats) front row seats in the left hand corner, perched high and precarious, as though at any moment we might crash into he pit. We sat on my rug, so that the seats were not too hard. (On the wall I scrawled – “Lois and Stephen their mark”.) Ripping to up in the Gods! I was in shabby grey bags and tweed jacket, Lois had brogue shoes, divided skirts, a cheeky green wool tam-o-shanter… Ye Gods!
Still raining; still cold
