Saturday 2nd September 1939
Damned sweaty. Much waiting in ranks. Good food.
A journey to Colchester – nasty fatigue, but “volunteers! Were ruthlessly picked to do most of the work and I not being one of these unfortunates, lay in the shade of a hedge, with Orrin and Gayler for about three hours. When our turn came to work, there was a pleasant evening chill in the air.
Mary exchanged the rosary given me last night for one she had obtained specially. It had been blessed by the priest for a soldier not a Catholic and would ensure its owner perhaps safety but otherwise a happy death. Curious feeling of security crept over me as I felt the unfamiliar rosary dangling there.
