Saturday 23rd December 1933

Met many old friends during the day. And in the evening I called on Akel at his shop. Watched them tending the foolish customers. Shop assistants, poor blighters! If I should become a great man, I will do something to help shop assistants.

After the shop closed, about 10p.m., Akel and I had coffee at Stokes! Akel the sad and gloomy. My outlook is happier, thank heavens. Probably my life has been happier; anyhow, fate seems to make it beautiful. People keep on asking me – “How is your new job?” “How do you like London?” and so forth. My usual reply is “Glorious!”
