Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd January 1934

Placid days, happy although ‘tis mid winter. Monday and I was still cleaning tanks in the stores. Larger tanks: one had to climb cans up and down. The decent 8ft. deep, had to jumped into! And if I missed the box, - 3inches of old varnish! However I had not missed. Spent the whole afternoon there and came out by ladder at 5 o’clock.

Tuesday, the old familiar job – little pots. Watching the thermometers and dials of oil pressure. Monday – one cigarette. Tuesday – two.
