Sunday 31st December 1933

New Years Eve. A delightfully mild day, for mid-winter. Morning stroll, about 7 miles. Across Callow Hill to Virginia Water and back by the main road. Paused in the fields and woods. Sunny quietness and peaceful, happy thoughts. Shuffle-shuffle-through dead, wet leaves. The main road, London to Southampton. It looked and sounded like it! Car after car, cycle after cycle. Endless, droning procession. Having a sore throat, I did not smoke today. It’s difficult to resist the habit!
