Saturday 30th December 1933

Spent the morning with the other men, on the roof of the making shop. Scraping the chimneys; dirty work and draughty. A long talk with two tramps in a spinney, after dinner. Ryder, an ex-stoker (merchant service, I saw his discharge papers). Also claims to be an ex-naval man. He told me lots about the casual wards and kip houses. Gave him some cigarettes and money.

Evening: Pictures with Harvey. Chief film was based on this – “Short therefore is man’s life; and narrow is the corner of the earth wherever he dwells”.
