Saturday 6th May 1939
Spinning westwards along the arterial road in the morning sunshine! A keen happy breeze came through the open window! The Works, Egham, Staines, Thameside, Old Windsor, Chertsey, Weybridge, Haleham, Wyraidisbury… Thunder, rain, fog. Koke at “The Bells of Ouzeley” Over two years since we met. How would she greet me? Stephen? No! It was “Dee!”
Drove back from Weybridge slowly through dark, thick fog. My bedroom at Mrs Stephens’ wasn’t cold or draughty. Apparently an airing cupboard was adjacent, but it seemed as if the earlier sunshine had been trapped in the room when I felt warm air sweep against me as I stepped inside. Read a horrific (10 cent) American magazine before going to sleep.
